The Recorders Office was the first constitutional county-level
office in Indiana, established in 1835. The office was created
to maintain a uniform record of the boundaries to properties.
As Indiana grew, so did the need to document ownership and boundaries
of property. Today, more than ever, the Recorder's Office provides
an invaluable resource in maintaining ownership and boundaries.
The Recorder’s Office plays a vital role in securing home
and land ownership for our residents. By making a permanent record
of each land and mortgage transaction (to the tune of 5.5 million
real property documents and growing), the Recorder’s Office
ensures that each parcel of land in the county has an uninterrupted
record of ownership and applicable liens. This information is
regularly accessed by the general public and also by title companies
at the time of purchase, mortgage companies to verify ownership
and apply for liens securing their returns, and credit entities
for information on property liens and estimating taxes. These
functions are an important protection against land
and mortgage fraud.
